Het kunstmatige meer in het midden dient als bekken voor de werking van de sluizen. Om het kanaal in stand en werkend te houden dient het water dus \'ingedamd\' te worden door middel van de sluizen.

Ja, anders hadden ze dat kanaal nog 20 meter dieper moeten graven, wat best lastig is.. bergen, rots enzo. Dan is ietsje hoger varen en gebruik maken van dat dikke meer toch handiger.
