De dwarshelling is een Nederlandse uitvinding en werd ruim honderd jaar geleden al gebruikt om de schepen te water te laten die aan het Winschoterdiep werden gebouwd. Dat kanaal was te smal voor langshellingen en de Grunningeners wilden er toch graag scheepjes bouwen.

Weinig doen dat ook maar tegenwoordig. Alleen zwaar overbeladen veerponten of veerponten die hun deuren open laten staan waardoor het autodek vol loopt. Veerponten zijn sowieso al redelijk kwetsbaar door die autodekken. Verder gaat er nog wel eens 1 ondersteboven als er verkeerd gelost wordt. Door echt slecht weer of iets dergelijks zinkt er nauwelijks iets.

Met de schepen gaat het altijd goed. Maar bij sommige werven worden er op de weg (Oude Rijksweg tussen Hoogezand en Groningen), containers neergezet om de vloedgolf tegen te houden. Regelmatig kunnen de bewoners aan de andere kant van de weg, dan de container uit hun tuin plukken.
Blijft machtig mooi om te zien. Hoppa, gewoon \"in\'t daip schoev\'n\".

Uit de recente geschiedenis is slechts één geval bekend waarbij een dwarshelling tewaterlating fout ging. Op 10 maart 1948 bleef het achterschip van de Rian iets achter op de wal. Hierdoor kantelde het schip door zodra het water werd geraakt. Het bleef op haar zij in het kanaal liggen. Hierbij was een dodelijk slachtoffer te betreuren. Smidsknecht Jan Diedo Landman (geboren 29 september 1924), beoogd machinist van het nieuwe schip, bevond zich in de machinekamer en kon hieruit niet meer ontsnappen. Er bevonden zich nog meer mensen aan boord maar deze wisten zich allemaal in veiligheid te brengen door van het schip te springen en naar de kant te zwemmen. Sindsdien is het voorschrift dat zich niemand bevindt op een schip dat te water wordt gelaten.

Daarnaast zijn dwarsscheepse tewaterlatingen zeer moeilijk berekenbaar, gezien de complexiteit van het proces en de scheepsbewegingen. Voor de tewaterlating wordt daarom de kennis en ervaring gebruikt die door de jaren heen is opgebouwd door de werven. Bij een modernisering wordt door de werven vaak een alternatieve te waterlatingsmethode verkozen, waarbij men het proces beter in de hand heeft.
